                    On Saturday, May 5^th during the 14^thAnnual Jersey Cares Day 2,500 volunteersfrom all over New Jersey will unite for the common goal of revitalizing andtransforming Newark, Jersey City, Edison, the Township of Morris, Pottersvilleand Trenton. For the past thirteen years, thousands of volunteers havetraveled to schools, parks and nonprofit organizations. They tackled projectslike painting classroom murals, planting community gardens, organizinglibraries, landscaping and removing trash in parks, and painting games onschool parking lots.

Jersey Cares Day alsosupports critical year round programs. Jersey Cares Day volunteers raisepledges from their friends and families for the hours they serve. This money ensures that Jersey Cares will continueto offer meaningful volunteer opportunities and community services.

People who are gluten free can become educated on what to look for to help them make healthier food choices. Attendees can ask questions on a gluten-free, raw food, or any other healthy eating lifestyles.

The Cookie Art of Amber Spiegel

Internationallyknown pastry artist, Amber Spiegel, will demonstrate the unique art of paintingon cookies at 1 PM, Saturday May 12^th, 2012 at Jewel SpiegelGallery, 30 North Dean Street in Englewood, NJ. A meet the artist and cookie tasting will follow the demonstration.        

Amber is theyoungest of three generations of Spiegel women who have dedicated their livesto the arts. Her designs reflect the skill and sensitivity in color and line ofthe late 19^th Century porcelain painters.

A Retrospective - Janet Spiegel, Fine Artist

A Meet-the-Artist reception will be hosted by Jewel Spiegel Gallery on Saturday, May 12th, 10am-6pm, at 30 North Dean Street, Englewood NJ.

Janet Spiegel, fine artist, will show a retrospective of her work which includes original oil paintings, gouache paintings, paintings on wood and digital prints.  Her drawings capture the attention of the sophisticated fashionista as well as an even younger generation.  Her simple shapes are as sophisticated as the Audrey Hepburn look of the fifties, and her patterns and colors have an ethereal quality taking you to another place in time.  Artwork will be on display during the month of May.

The JCC is launching JCC University – a new and innovative educational program that offers an engaging, interdisciplinary curriculum specifically designed for adults who want to feed their intellect and discover new passions and potential.

Courses are led by top professors and leading experts in their fields, who will share their knowledge and engage participants in dynamic dialogue. Each session opens with coffee and conversation, followed by a 90-minute presentation on a “Hot Topic of Today,” that includes open discussion and a Q&A. The day then breaks for lunch (buy or bring), where participants can enjoy some time with fellow classmates. The afternoon then continues with a second 90-minute lecture on topics ranging from humanities to wellness.

Free introductory session on Thursday, May 17, followed by three consecutive sessions on, May 24, May 31 and June 7. All four sessions will run from 10 AM-2:30 PM, with a morning lecture from 10:30 am–12:00 pm and an afternoon lecture from 1:00 – 2:30 pm:

• Changing Dynamics in the Middle East: From Tahrir Square to Rothschild Boulevard led by Sagi Melamed, Harvard Graduate and VP of External Affairs at the Max Stern Yezreel Valley College in Israel. Melamed will discuss political, cultural and social change in Israel, Iran and the Middle East.
• A Practical Approach to Total Wellness led by Dr. Katherine Roberts, Ed.D in Health Sciences from Columbia University. Dr Roberts will discuss small changes you can make for a healthier lifestyle.

Disordered Eating or Eating Disorders?

A Seminar for Parents & Teens at the Kaplen JCC on the Palisades

Thursday, May 17, 7-9 PM

The Kaplen JCC on the Palisades is holding an open forum where parents and teens can learn about healthy vs. unhealthy relationships to food and body image, how to recognize the signs of an eating disorder, and action steps that can be taken as a means of prevention for these widespread and self-harming behaviors. The seminar will feature a presentation as well as separate break out sessions for parents and teens that will be led by experts in the field.

Pauline Bergstein, a licensed psychologist, will speak to parents.

•   The Upcoming Election and Its Implications led by Dr. Howard Stoffer, Principal Advisor, Counter-Terrorism Executive Directorate of the Security Council of the United Nations and past Senior Foreign Service Officer with the US Department of State. Dr. Stoffer will discuss the influence that the election results will have on the U.S Supreme Court and our legal system.
•  Your Connection to a Happier, Healthier You led by David Singer, author of Six Simple Rules for a Better Life. He will discuss practical, achievable ways to become happier and healthier.

•  Fighting World Terrorism led by Dr. David Scharia, legal expert, author and scholar in residence at Columbia Law School (2011-2012) and expert at the Counter-Terrorism Executive Directorate (CTED) of the United Nations Security Council. Dr. Scharia will discuss the global picture on counter-terrorism activities and approaches of the US and the UN.

The TenaflyEducational Foundation’s annual Tenafly 5K Run and Dog Walk, now in its 14thyear, will take place on Sunday, June 3, at Tenafly Middle School on SunsetLane in Tenafly, from 8 a.m. to noon. With an ever-increasing crowd each year,organizers are expecting the largest turnout ever of seasoned runners, walkers,and our newest trainees: toddlers. Youngsters under 6 years old can nowparticipate in short-distance Tiger Cub Races at the TEF 5K.

TEF’sbeautiful 5K course will follow a USATF-certified route through the tree-linedstreets of Tenafly, with hundreds of volunteers doling out cups of water andcheering on the runners.

The 5K Run,Walk, and Stroller Trot begin at 9:00 a.m. sharp, followed by the 5K Dog Walkat 9:05. The Dog Parade and Agility Course begins at 10:00, with the new TigerCub Races starting at 10:15, and the 1-Mile Fun Run and the Challenger Fun Runtaking off at 10:40. The last event of the day is our 1-Mile Doggie Fun Run at10:45.

 RIDE TO FIGHT HUNGER:  JEWISH FAMILY SERVICE ANNOUNCES

            2^nd ANNUAL “WHEELS FOR MEALS” EVENT           

WHAT:  Committed tohelp fight hunger, JFS of Bergen and North Hudson announces the 2^nd annual “Wheels for Meals”event on June 10.  The multi-distance cyclingfundraiser offers several biking routes, a 5k walk, sponsor expo, food,beverages, music, and prizes for all.   Challenging routes for advanced cyclists as well asfamily-friendly courses for every age will be available.  Individuals and teams are encouraged toparticipate. 

The event was initiallycreated by17-year old David Feuerstein, a local teenage volunteer who deliveredmeals to those in need.  David, acycling enthusiast, spearheaded a committee organized by JFS to increasemonetary resources via a ride to fight hunger in Bergen County.   The event geared for people of all ages and cycling levelsraised over $50,000 in 2011.  Thisyear a 5k Walk has been added.  And once again, David has signed on to helpensure a successful day.
