We are considering adopting a dog and do not know what kind to look for. We need a dog that doesn't shed much or bark much and is good with lots of little kids.  Any suggestions which kind and where to find. Will not purchase a dog! Only rescue!!

We got our dog almost two years ago from North Shore Animal Leaque (based in Long Island).  I wanted a smallish dog and I got exactly what I wanted.  North Shore happens to have a mobil unit (van) that goes to many locations, you can find out where it will be and when on their website.  I went to the van when it was in NYC outside FAO Scwartz.  This was great for me, because they brought dogs that would be good for apartment living, thus smallish.  They were all puppies around 8-10 weeks old.  I would go to North Shore again.  I am completely and totally happy.  Check it out!  Good luck!

Our dog is a Chihuahua mix(sheds, but not a lot), she is about 17 lbs.  When I got her they estimated she would be under 30 lbs.  That is the thing with shelter puppies, they are most times mixes and they have no real way of knowing exactly how big they will get.  It had the early shots, but I had to get her the rest over the next several months.  She was already spayed.  You do have to pay at North Shore... It was $240 two years ago.  I have a 6 & 9 yr. old.  She is great with them and does not bark a lot.  Although a new dog in the neighborhood does bark which has made her bark more than she used to!  My kids loved the idea of saving dog's lives and getting one from the shelter, it was a great lesson!

The Bergen Country Animal Shelter in Teterboro has more than 100 wonderful dogs looking for homes.  The dogs are all temperment tested, spayed/neutered and receive all shots before adoption.  The staff and volunteers at the shelter will go out of their way to match the right dog with the right family, and tirelessly work with all the animals to prepare them for family life.  Animals are appearing at the shelter in record numbers, and with times being what they are....funds are extremely low.  Please take a look at some of these great animals on the website: http://www.co.bergen.nj.us/bcas/ and check out their Facebook: http://tinyurl.com/Animalshelter

There's a free obedience class with each adoption, too.
